A first arrival
We were very happy to welcome the first group of artists to Lisbon and to our pop-up studio in the brilliant, creative neighbourhood of Beato. Artists Clara Imbert, Divine Southgate-smith, Lulu Wolf and Shawna Ferreira experimented and developed different bodies of work during their residency, ranging from photography to video, sculpture, sound and painting.
During this season the artists’ work was developed through different means of research and experimentation, partly working at the studio as well as with different external resources, including local artisans workshops. In the case of Shawna Ferreira, it entailed a trip through different cities and landscapes in Portugal.
The first season was also the beginning of our pop-up’s development, setting up relationships with some of our neighbours and partners such as Ar.Co, Centre for Art and Visual Communication, as well as creating bonds with institutions and fellow artists
We were pleased to welcome artists, curators and other guests who visited the studio, which created an opportunity for exchange and for them to get to know and chat with the artists in residency about their work and experience in Lisbon.

Ar.Co, Centre for Art and Visual Communication is an independent art school dedicated to the experimentation, training and promotion of arts, crafts and visual communication.
From early on in the school’s history, the alternative nature of the pedagogic project has consisted mainly of bringing together a strong emphasis on practice, a daily multi-disciplinary atmosphere and a view of artistic training as a service that should “make a difference” for a public with the most diverse objectives.
It focuses mainly on Drawing, Painting, Photography, Jewellery, Ceramics, Illustration/Comics, Cinema/Movement Image, Art History and Theory, Individual and multi-disciplinary projects. The therapeutic dimension of the training in the arts is, likewise, not forgotten.
As part of the overall training programme, Ar.Co frequently promotes conferences and informal meetings with specialists in a number of different areas and organizes public exhibitions of the students’ production and, possibly, of national or international production in one or more areas connected to its departments’ activities.
Thirdbase has set up a collaborative relationship with Ar.Co, whereby our artists in residence are welcome to use some of the school’s facilities as well as having the opportunity to have more in-depth knowledge of their programme and activities.
Ar.Co is a non-profit cultural association of public utility.
